First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama in surprise visit to Haiti


PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti: US First Lady Michelle Obama paid a surprise visit to Haiti on Tuesday, describing the damage three months after the Caribbean nation's was devastated by themasive earthquake as "powerful"
Obama stopped in Haiti on her way to Mexico on her first solo trip since her husband, Barack Obama,become president of the United States in January 2009.

She was accompanied by Jill Biden, wife of US Vice president Joe Biden, the white house said in a statement.

After Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Biden flew over heavily damaged Port-au-Prince in a US Army helicopter, they landed in the grounds of the National palace. There was greeted by Haitian President Rene Preval and First Lady Elizabeth Preval.

"It's powerful. The devastation is definitely".

Haiti is still struggling to rebuilt after the 7.0 magnitude quakestruck the country on January 12, leveling much of the capital Port-au-Prince and many nearby towns.

Hundred of thousands of Haitians are still living in miserable conditions in makeshift camps which have sprung around the capital, despite a massive international effort.
